Attendance

Attendance Matters
At Brunswick House Primary school our aim for the 2017/18 academic year is that all pupils attain 97% attendance by the end of term 6 in July 2018.

You may be surprised to learn that if your child is absent from school for more than 11 sessions in the academic year (that’s 51/2 days) then he or she will not attain the school’s target of 97% attendance.

For some parents, 90% may seem like an acceptable level of attendance, but the reality is that 90% attendance means that your child will miss half a school day each week or 19 days of school during the school year – that’s nearly 4 school weeks. 90% attendance equates to 38 sessions of absence during the academic year.  Our ‘Attendance Matters’ leaflet gives further information and can be found here.

Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Pupils learn new things at school every day – missing school simply puts them behind and can hinder their life chances.

Absence Due to Illness
If your child is not coming to school because they are unwell then please contact the school by telephone or email before 9am for each day they are absent from school.  Failure to contact the school will lead to a message being sent to you via email or text asking you to contact the school giving the reason for your child’s absence.
Please telephone 01622 752102 or email absence@brunswick-house.kent.sch.uk It is very important for safeguarding reasons that we are informed by you that your child will not be in school for any reason.

Absence Due to Hospital, Doctor, Dental or Optician Appointments.
Although we understand that it is not always feasible to see a doctor or dentist after school, we do ask that when at all possible these appointments be made from 3.45pm onwards to prevent your child missing valuable time away from school during the day.  If an appointment during the school day is unavoidable then you must complete an Application for Leave of Absence During Term Time form and return this to the school office before the day of the appointment.  Evidence in the form of an appointment card or hospital letter must be provided at the time of submitting the completed form.  Your doctor and/or dental receptionist will provide you with evidence if you ask for this.

Absence Due to Diarrhoea And Sickness.
Please consider these implications carefully before making a decision as to whether to send your child to school or keep them at home.  Ideally if they have been physically sick or have diarrhoea then they are to stay home for at least 24 hours from the last episode.  (Public Health England recommends 48 hours).  However, we often find that once a child comes into school they can feel a lot better.

Leave of Absence During Term Time for any Other Reason.
If, due to exceptional circumstances, you find that you need to request time away from school for your child please complete the Application for Leave of Absence During Term Time form and return this to the school office.  Please give plenty of time for this request to be processed by Mrs Skinner and please attach evidence of the reason for the request for absence when submitting the completed leave of absence form.  Requests for time away from school during term time for family holidays will not be authorised

Penalty Notices
An unauthorised absence of 5 days or more will result in a request being made for a Penalty Notice to be issued. Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each child and the amount of the penalty is £120 to be paid within 28 days, reduced to £60 if paid within 21 days. Failure to pay the penalty in full at the end of the 28 day period may result in prosecution by the Kent County Council Attendance Service.

Attendance Incentives
We already have numerous incentives for your child to attend school and your support and encouragement can help us achieve our target of 97%.  One of our current attendance rewards is a tea party for the whole class where a parent is invited to join them.  This is for the class that attains the highest attendance in the previous term.   Our other attendance rewards are outlined in our Attendance presentation, which can be found here

If you would like any further information regarding attendance please see our Attendance Policy or should you wish to speak to me about your child’s attendance then please do not hesitate to contact me further.  I am in school from 8.30am – 4.30pm, Monday – Friday and I am situated in the school office, please pop into reception at any time.  Alternatively you can contact me by telephone on 01622 752102 or by emailing me at absence@brunswick-house.kent.sch.uk
